What F02 Means
Freestanding and slide-in Range: KitchenAid publishes F02 - the three-character form with a leading zero used on certain displays - with the sentence that there may be a problem with the oven temperature sensor, the control, or the associated wiring. The sensor is a probe in the oven cavity whose resistance changes with heat, and the control reads it to decide when the bake and broil elements switch. A reading it will not accept leaves the range without a safe basis for regulating the cavity. Spacing and leading zeros are not interchangeable across these pages, so quote F02 exactly as your display printed it. KitchenAid notes on the pages in this family that the error code may display in F# E# format or in E# F# format, so the same fault can appear with the two halves swapped.
Common Causes of F02
- The oven temperature sensor open, shorted or reading outside its range
- The sensor connection behind the cavity loose or corroded
- The control misreading a sensor that is itself sound
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Let the oven cavity and the cooktop cool before you do anything, and put every surface knob at off. A range holds heat in its grates or its glass long after the controls are off. No owner-side sensor test is published, so the step is the reset: power the range down by switching off its circuit breakers for one minute, power it back up, watch it for one minute to be sure the code does not return, and verify the range operates. Before the oven goes back into ordinary use after F02, put an independent thermometer in the cold cavity, set a temperature and see what it actually reaches. On a range you can also note whether the cooktop still behaves normally, which helps separate an oven-side fault from something broader.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- An oven that cannot trust its temperature reading may not switch its elements off when it should, which in a run of kitchen units is a fire question rather than a cooking one.
- Three candidates share one sentence, so replacing the cheapest on a guess usually leaves the fault where it was and the labour spent.
- A freestanding range stands on its own feet and is held against tipping by a bracket at the floor, so pulling one out to reach behind it without releasing that bracket properly is how ranges come forward off their footing.
