What Lo or Pre Means
Freestanding and slide-in Range: this is one of the least alarming things a range display can show and it is worth saying so plainly. KitchenAid states that if the display reads Lo or Pre after you have turned the oven on, this is simply showing that the oven temperature is low - below 170 degrees F - or that it is pre-heating. It adds that on some models, once the temperature reaches 170 degrees F the display shows the actual temperature and increases in five-degree increments, and that a tone sounds when the set temperature is reached. Nothing is wrong and nothing needs clearing.
Common Causes of Lo or Pre
- An oven that has just been switched on and is still below 170 degrees F
- A normal preheat in progress, which is what Pre reports
- An oven that is not heating at all, if the display never changes
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Wait. The display changes on its own as the cavity warms, and on models that show a rising temperature you will see it climb in five-degree steps from 170 degrees F upward, with a tone when the setpoint is reached. If Lo or Pre never changes and the oven does not warm at all, that is a different matter - it stops being a normal preheat display and becomes a question about whether the oven is heating, which is worth having looked at.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- Nothing is failing here in the ordinary case, and Lo or Pre is the range reporting normal preheat behaviour.
- If the display never moves past Lo, the useful question is whether the oven is heating at all, and that is answered by measurement rather than by staring at the panel.
- On a gas model the supply line and its shut-off are behind the range, so moving the appliance means the gas off first and the connection tested afterwards - not an owner step.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
