When a KitchenAid range hood’s light still works but the fan won’t turn on — or turns on only at certain speeds — the cause is usually isolated to a specific part of the fan circuit rather than the whole unit failing.
Step 1: Test Every Speed Setting
If the fan runs at high speed but not low, or vice versa, the fan motor itself is likely fine and the fault sits in the speed control switch or its wiring. A motor that won’t run at any speed points toward a different, usually more involved, cause.
Step 2: Check for an Overheated Motor Cutout
Some range hood fan motors include a thermal cutout that shuts the motor down if it overheats, often from running for extended periods or from a motor bearing that’s starting to bind. If the fan stopped mid-use rather than failing to start at all, give it time to cool before testing again.
Step 3: Look for an Obstruction in the Fan Housing
Grease buildup or a foreign object lodged against the fan blade can prevent it from spinning even when the motor itself receives power, sometimes producing a faint humming sound rather than silence.
Step 4: Confirm Power Is Reaching the Unit
If the light works but the fan doesn’t respond at any speed, check the dedicated breaker, since some installations wire the light and fan motor to slightly different circuits.
