What Lock Means
Freestanding and slide-in Range: KitchenAid publishes Lock for this family using the same text it uses for its cooktops, and it describes a feature rather than a fault. If control lock is activated when power to the cooktop is off, the cooktop is locked out and the surface cooking areas cannot be turned on by the touch controls. If control lock is activated when power to the cooktop is on, all keypads are locked out except Power and Off. The lock exists to avoid unintended use of the surface cooking areas, and the published way out is to touch and hold LOCK for three seconds.
Common Causes of Lock
- Control lock set deliberately, or by a long press nobody noticed
- The lock activated while power to the cooktop was off, which locks the areas out completely
- A control that is not registering the unlock hold because something is on the glass
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Touch and hold LOCK for three seconds to unlock, which is the published instruction and usually all that is needed. If the panel does not respond to the hold, check that nothing is resting on the control area and that the glass is clean and dry, because the lock key has to be read like any other. If Lock remains displayed with a clear panel and a proper three-second hold, power the range down by switching off its circuit breakers for one minute, power it back up, watch it for one minute to be sure the code does not return, and verify the range operates.

- Nothing is failing here, and a lock that works is doing exactly what it exists to do around children.
- If a correct three-second hold on a clean panel will not release it, the touch control is not reading properly, and that sits under the cooktop.
- Pressing harder and repeatedly on an unresponsive panel is how a glass touch surface gets cracked, which turns a setting into a real repair.
