KitchenAid prints this code in the lower-case form you see on the display - published exactly that way rather than as capitals - so the lower case is part of the code rather than a fault in the display. The cooling fan keeps oven heat out of the control panel and away from the cabinetry beside the range. The control watches the fan's actual speed against what it asked for, and 4d21 means the fan is turning more slowly than it should - which is a different report from a fan that has stopped altogether.

Let the oven cavity and the cooktop cool before you do anything. A range holds heat in the glass or the grates long after the controls are off, and an oven that has just self-cleaned is far hotter than it looks. Before the reset, check what you can see: that the vent at the back of the cooktop or below the control panel is not blocked by foil, a cloth or something stored on the range, and that nothing has been pushed into the gaps at the sides. Then power the range down by switching off its circuit breakers for one minute, power it back up, watch it for one minute to be sure the code does not return, and verify the range operates. If 4d21 returns, stop using the oven for long or high-temperature cycles until it has been seen.

- The cooling fan keeps oven heat off the control panel and away from the units either side, so running a range that has reported low fan speed puts heat where the kitchen was never designed to take it.
- The fan sits in the hottest part of the range behind the panel, and reaching it means moving and isolating the appliance rather than lifting a cover.
- A fan slowing because of worn bearings gets worse as it heats, so a code that clears cold and returns mid-cycle has not gone anywhere.
