KitchenAid Refrigerator Ice Maker Not Making Ice: What to Check

An ice maker is a fairly self-contained system, which is why it can stop working completely while the rest of the refrigerator keeps running normally.

An ice maker is a fairly self-contained system bolted into the freezer, which is why it can stop working completely while the rest of your KitchenAid refrigerator keeps running normally. A short round of checks usually narrows down where the failure actually sits.

Step 1: Confirm the Freezer Is Cold Enough

Most ice makers won’t cycle at all unless the freezer compartment is holding at or below roughly 10-15°F. If the freezer itself is running warm for any reason, the ice maker isn’t malfunctioning on its own — it’s simply waiting for a temperature it never reaches.

Step 2: Check Water Pressure at the Line

Ice makers need a minimum water pressure to fill properly, and a partially closed shutoff valve behind the refrigerator, or a kinked supply line from a recent move, can restrict flow just enough to prevent a normal fill cycle without stopping water flow entirely.

Step 3: Listen for the Harvest Cycle

Every so often, a properly working ice maker runs a brief motorized harvest cycle to twist or tilt the mold and release finished cubes into the bin. If you never hear this cycle at all, the mold thermostat that signals when ice is ready to harvest may have failed, even though water is still filling the tray normally.

Step 4: Rule Out the Water Filter

A filter well past its replacement interval can restrict flow enough to slow ice production dramatically before stopping it altogether, so a fresh filter is worth ruling out before assuming a bigger fault.
