What F1-2 Means
Freestanding and slide-in Range: the sentence published for F1-2 is that there may be a problem with the oven temperature sensor, the control, or the associated wiring. F1-2 carries the same sentence as F1-1 and F1-3, on a page of its own. KitchenAid prints this code with a hyphen, which is how the older range control platforms render it. The hyphenated form and the spaced F# E# form are published as separate pages, so the punctuation on your display is part of the information. The sensor is a probe in the cavity whose resistance changes with heat, and the control reads it to decide when the elements switch. A reading it will not accept leaves the range with no safe basis for regulating the oven, so it stops.
Common Causes of F1-2
- The oven temperature sensor open, shorted or drifted out of range
- The sensor connection behind the cavity loose or corroded
- The control misreading a sensor that is itself sound
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Let the oven cavity and the cooktop cool before you do anything, and put every surface knob at off. A range holds heat in its grates or its glass long after the controls are off. No owner-side sensor test is published, so the documented step is the reset: power the range down by switching off its circuit breakers for one minute, power it back up, watch it for one minute to be sure the code does not return, and verify the range operates. Before the oven goes back into normal use after F1-2, set a temperature with an independent thermometer inside the cold cavity and see what it actually reaches. An oven running far hot or far cold is the observation worth more than the code.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- An oven that cannot trust its temperature reading may not switch its elements off when it should, which in a run of kitchen units is a fire question rather than a cooking one.
- The sensor connector sits behind the cavity wall, reached only with the range moved out and the circuit isolated.
- On a gas model the supply line and its shut-off are behind the range, so moving the appliance means the gas off first and the connection tested afterwards - not an owner step.
