The keypad and the board behind it are in conversation whenever a cycle is being set up, and this code is what the range shows when that conversation stops making sense - a key reporting itself pressed and never releasing, or a panel the control can no longer hear. KitchenAid does not separate those two possibilities, which is why the wiring is named in the same sentence as the part.

Cooking grease and steam settling on a membrane will hold a key down, and on a range that panel sits directly above a cooktop that produces both, so contamination is a more realistic cause here than on an appliance mounted away from the hob. Then power the range down by switching off its circuit breakers for one minute, power it back up, watch it for one minute to be sure the code does not return, and verify the range operates.

- When the published text names a component and its wiring together, the wiring is at least as likely as the part, and only a continuity check settles which of them it is.
- The control this panel talks to is what permits the oven elements and, on many models, the surface controls to run, so a loom reseated wrongly can leave heat available with the display showing nothing.
