KitchenAid prints this code in the lower-case form you see on the display - the characters are published exactly that way rather than as capitals, so the lower case is part of the code and not a fault in the display. The cooling fan is what keeps the heat of the cavity out of the cabinetry around it and off the electronics above it. The control watches the fan's actual speed against what it asked for, and 4d22 means the fan is turning more slowly than it should - which is a different report from a fan that has stopped.

- An airflow restriction at the vent or around the oven housing
- The cooling fan motor slowing as its bearings wear
- Wiring to the fan degraded, or the control no longer driving it properly

Let the cavity cool with the door closed before you do anything. An oven that has just been cooking holds enough heat to burn through a cloth, and a self-clean cycle leaves it far hotter than that. Before the reset, check what you can see without tools: that the vent along the top of the door or the trim is not blocked by foil, a tea towel, a tray stored against it or a cabinet fitted too tightly, and that nothing has been pushed into the gap around the oven. Then power the oven down by switching off its circuit breakers for one minute, power it back up, watch it for one minute to be sure the code does not return, and verify the oven operates. If 4d22 returns, stop using the oven until it is seen rather than running long or high-temperature cycles with reduced cooling.

- The cooling fan is what keeps cabinet timber and adjacent worktops away from cavity temperatures, so running an oven that has reported low fan speed puts heat where the installation was never designed to take it.
- The fan sits above or behind the cavity in the hottest part of the appliance, and reaching it means drawing a heavy built-in oven out of its opening with the circuit isolated.
- A fan slowing because of worn bearings usually gets worse under heat, so a code that clears when cold and returns mid-cycle is not a code that has gone away.
