On Electric Ranges: Look at the Bake Element
Many electric ranges use an exposed coil at the bottom of the cavity that should glow a visible orange-red within a minute or two of starting a bake cycle. If yours stays dark, dim, or only glows in patches, the element itself has likely burned through at a weak point and needs replacement — this is one of the more affordable range repairs there is.
Hidden Bake Elements Are Different
Some models conceal the bake element beneath the floor of the oven cavity rather than exposing it, radiating heat upward through the metal panel instead of glowing visibly. Because you can’t see this element directly, a failure here shows up only as an oven that simply never gets hot, with no visual clue pointing to the cause.
On Gas Ranges: The Igniter Has Two Jobs
A gas oven’s igniter isn’t just a spark source — it also has to draw enough electrical current to pull open the safety valve that releases gas to the burner. A weakening igniter can glow and draw some current without ever reaching the threshold needed to open that valve, which means the burner never lights even though the igniter is clearly working to some degree.
Rule Out the Simple Stuff First
Confirm the oven is actually set to bake and not just its clock or timer function, and check that the dedicated circuit breaker hasn’t tripped, especially after any other appliance issue in the kitchen.
