What F1 E4 Means
Wall Oven and Combination Wall Oven: this code belongs to the microwave half of a combination appliance - the cavity that has a microwave in it as well as an oven. F1 E4 is published with the sentence that there may be a problem with the microwave appliance manager or microwave power relay, or the associated wiring. The power relay is the switch that lets high voltage reach the microwave generating circuit, so a fault naming it is a fault about whether microwave power is being switched the way the control intends. KitchenAid adds a note to the pages in this family that is worth knowing: the error code may display in F# E# format or in E# F# format, so the same fault can appear with the two halves swapped.
Common Causes of F1 E4
- The microwave power relay failing to open or close as commanded
- The microwave appliance manager not driving the relay correctly
- Wiring between the two loose, burnt or corroded
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Let the cavity cool with the door closed before you do anything. An oven that has just been cooking holds enough heat to burn through a cloth, and a self-clean cycle leaves it far hotter than that. Keep the door closed and go to the breaker: power the oven down by switching off its circuit breakers for one minute, power it back up, watch it for one minute to be sure the code does not return, and verify the oven operates. If F1 E4 returns, leave the appliance off at the breaker rather than continuing to try microwave functions, and say when you book that the code names the power relay as well as the manager.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- A relay in the microwave power path is the component that decides whether high voltage reaches the generating circuit, and that is not something to test or replace alongside a charged capacitor.
- The high-voltage capacitor in a microwave holds its charge after the supply is disconnected, which makes the inside of this appliance dangerous even when it appears dead.
- KitchenAid names two components and the wiring together, so the choice between them is made with instruments rather than by elimination.
