What Sabbath, Sab, 5Ab, or 5A6 Means
Built-In Microwave, including the microwave-oven combination: the appliance is in Sabbath Mode, which KitchenAid describes as setting "the oven to remain on in a Bake setting until turned off." It publishes what the mode does in some detail: only the Bake cycle operates, all other cooking and cleaning cycles are disabled, no tones sound, the displays do not indicate temperature changes, and opening or closing the door does not switch the light or the heating elements immediately. It lists what is disabled - the 12 hour shutoff, all tones and chimes, timers, cooktop lockout and energy save where fitted - and notes that all keys are disabled except START, CANCEL or OFF, plus warming zone and warming drawer controls on select models. KitchenAid states the mode is factory set to disabled.

Nothing is wrong, so nothing needs fixing. Expect the appliance to feel unresponsive while the mode is on: that is the mode working, and most keys are meant to do nothing.

- Everything the appliance is doing here is documented and intentional, so a repair would be a visit spent switching off a feature.
- The one thing worth knowing is that the 12 hour shutoff is disabled in this mode, so an oven left in Bake will stay in Bake until somebody cancels it.
- A microwave stores energy in its high-voltage capacitor, and that charge does not drain when the power goes off; opening the outer case is therefore dangerous even on a unit that has been disconnected for hours.
