What F8 E4 Means
Built-In Microwave, including the microwave-oven combination: KitchenAid publishes for F8 E4 "There may be a problem with the Exhaust Fan Air Temperature Sensor, or the associated wiring." The exhaust fan air temperature sensor measures the air leaving the appliance. That reading is a protection: it is how the control would know the cabinet is running hotter than it should. A fault against it removes the warning rather than the heat.
Common Causes of F8 E4
- An exhaust air temperature sensor failed or out of range
- Sensor wiring damaged in the exhaust path
- A control channel no longer reading that sensor
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Let the appliance cool and keep the door shut, then cut power at the breaker rather than reaching behind a built-in cabinet for a plug: power the unit down by switching off the circuit breakers for one minute, power it back up, watch the oven for one minute to see whether the code returns, and verify the oven operates.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- An appliance that has lost a thermal protection reading will not warn you the next time it runs hot, which is the reason not to keep using it while this stands.
- The high-voltage capacitor inside a microwave can hold a lethal charge after the unit is unplugged and the display is dead, so the inside of the cabinet is not an owner check at any point in this process, whatever the code turns out to mean.
- KitchenAid names more than one possible culprit in the same sentence, so buying whichever part is cheapest to find is a coin toss rather than a repair.
