What F4 E6 Means
Built-In Microwave, including the microwave-oven combination: KitchenAid publishes for F4 E6 "There may be a problem with the Microwave Wave Guide Temperature Sensor, or the associated wiring." The wave guide is the channel that carries energy from the magnetron into the cooking cavity, and it has a temperature sensor on it because it is one of the places the appliance must not be allowed to get too hot. A fault against that sensor means a thermal protection has stopped reporting.
Common Causes of F4 E6
- A wave guide temperature sensor failed or out of range
- Sensor wiring damaged along the guide
- A control no longer reading that channel
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Let the appliance cool and keep the door shut, then cut power at the breaker rather than reaching behind a built-in cabinet for a plug: power the unit down by switching off the circuit breakers for one minute, power it back up, watch the oven for one minute to see whether the code returns, and verify the oven operates. Then stop using it until it has been looked at.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- The wave guide runs directly from the magnetron, which is the high-voltage end of the appliance, so nothing on or around it is an owner check even with the unit unplugged.
- A microwave stores energy in its high-voltage capacitor, and that charge does not drain when the power goes off; opening the outer case is therefore dangerous even on a unit that has been disconnected for hours.
- When the published text names a component and its wiring in the same breath, the wiring is at least as likely as the part, and only a continuity check settles which.
