What F1 E6 Means
Built-In Microwave, including the microwave-oven combination: KitchenAid publishes for F1 E6 "There may be a problem with the Microwave Thermistor or Sensor, or the associated wiring." A thermistor is a resistor whose value changes with temperature, and the control uses it to know how warm something in the microwave section is getting. The code says the value coming back could not be a real temperature - too high, too low, or an open circuit reading as infinite.
Common Causes of F1 E6
- A thermistor that has failed open or short
- A sensor lead damaged or unseated at its connector
- A control channel no longer reading the sensor correctly
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Let the appliance cool and keep the door shut, then cut power at the breaker rather than reaching behind a built-in cabinet for a plug: power the unit down by switching off the circuit breakers for one minute, power it back up, watch the oven for one minute to see whether the code returns, and verify the oven operates.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- Thermistors are cheap and the wiring to them is not, so replacing the part without checking the loom is the classic way to pay twice for the same fault.
- The high-voltage capacitor inside a microwave can hold a lethal charge after the unit is unplugged and the display is dead, so the inside of the cabinet is not an owner check at any point in this process, whatever the code turns out to mean.
- KitchenAid names more than one possible culprit in the same sentence, so buying whichever part is cheapest to find is a coin toss rather than a repair.
