What F04 Means
Built-In Microwave, including the microwave-oven combination: KitchenAid publishes for F04 "There may be a problem with the Electronic Oven Control, or the associated wiring." The wording matters a little: this names the electronics themselves rather than a sensor or a motor, which means the appliance caught something wrong inside its own decision-making and stopped instead of continuing on a result it could not verify.
Common Causes of F04
- The control failing an internal self-check
- Wiring to or from the control loose, chafed or corroded
- Electronics disturbed by a surge or a power outage
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Let the appliance cool and leave the door shut, then cut power at the breaker rather than reaching behind a built-in cabinet for a plug: power the unit down by switching off the circuit breakers for one minute, power it back up, watch the oven for one minute to see whether the code returns, and verify the oven operates. A control fault that clears on a power interruption and never returns was most likely a supply event; one that returns immediately was not.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- Control boards are not interchangeable across revisions, and ordering one from a code rather than from the model and serial is a common and expensive mistake.
- The magnetron circuit runs at thousands of volts and its capacitor holds that charge with the appliance dead and cold, so no part of this diagnosis is an owner task once the case is on the other side of it.
- A built-in microwave is trimmed into a cabinet run and carries its weight on a frame, so it comes out of the wall before anything inside it can be reached - not a step to improvise alone.
