What F02 Means
Built-In Microwave, including the microwave-oven combination: KitchenAid gives F02 the sentence "There may be a problem with the Oven Temperature Sensor, the Control, or the associated wiring." Nothing in this code says the cavity was too hot. It says the control could not get a reading it believed, which is a different thing and is why the published text lists the sensor, the control and the wiring as equal candidates.
Common Causes of F02
- A temperature probe that has drifted out of range or failed open
- Sensor wiring damaged, disconnected or reading through a corroded pin
- A control no longer interpreting the sensor signal correctly
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Let the cavity cool completely first - a combination unit holds heat long after the display goes dark - then power the unit down by switching off the circuit breakers for one minute, power it back up, watch the oven for one minute to see whether the code returns, and verify the oven operates. If you have an independent oven thermometer, put it in the cavity on the next conventional cycle; whether the real temperature matches the setting is the single most useful thing you can hand over when F02 is being diagnosed.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- Telling a failed probe from a failed control needs a resistance reading taken with the appliance dead, and the two faults look identical from the front of the cabinet.
- A microwave stores energy in its high-voltage capacitor, and that charge does not drain when the power goes off; opening the outer case is therefore dangerous even on a unit that has been disconnected for hours.
- Reaching anything inside a built-in unit means pulling it out of its cabinet opening, which on most installations means removing trim and taking the weight of the appliance while it slides.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
