What E61 Means

Over-the-Range Microwave: KitchenAid publishes for E61 "The oven sensor circuit reported an open condition to the control board. There may a problem with the Sensor, the Appliance Control Board, or the associated wiring." The oven sensor is the cavity temperature probe for the conventional function. An open condition means the board found no continuity through it - a break rather than a bad value, and the appliance stops because it has no temperature to work with at all.

Common Causes of E61

  • An oven sensor failed open
  • A broken wire or unseated connector in the sensor circuit
  • A control board input that has failed

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try

Switch off the cooking surface underneath and let it cool before you stand at the appliance at all - an over-the-range unit puts your forearms directly above a range, and a burn from a hot hob is the injury that actually happens while people are troubleshooting a microwave. Then power the unit down by switching off the circuit breakers for one minute, power it back up, watch the microwave for one minute to see whether the code returns, and verify the microwave operates.

⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That

  • Without a cavity temperature the appliance has nothing to regulate against, so this is not a code to reset and cook through while waiting for an appointment.
  • The magnetron circuit runs at thousands of volts and its capacitor holds that charge with the appliance dead and cold, so no part of this diagnosis is an owner task once the case is on the other side of it.
  • An over-the-range unit hangs on a wall bracket above a cooking surface and is bolted through the cabinet above it; taking it down is a two-person job over a cooktop, and dropping it is the usual way this goes wrong.

Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.

E61 FAQ

KitchenAid names them differently and keeps separate pages, so E61 concerns the oven sensor circuit specifically rather than the thermal sensor.

No - an appliance that cannot read cavity temperature has no way to hold the setting you chose, and time alone is not a substitute for that.
