What E03 Means
Over-the-Range Microwave: KitchenAid publishes for E03 "The Keypad (User Interface) reported a problem to the control board. There may be a problem with the Keypad (User Interface) or the associated wiring." Note the direction of that sentence. The keypad reported the problem; the board did not go looking for it. That is the panel running its own check, finding something wrong and saying so, which is why KitchenAid names the keypad and its wiring rather than the board.
Common Causes of E03
- A key registering as held down, often from grease drifting up from the range below
- A keypad or user interface assembly that has failed its own check
- Wiring between the keypad and the control board
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Switch off the cooking surface underneath and let it cool before you stand at the appliance at all - an over-the-range unit puts your forearms directly above a range, and a burn from a hot hob is the injury that actually happens while people are troubleshooting a microwave. Then power the unit down by switching off the circuit breakers for one minute, power it back up, watch the microwave for one minute to see whether the code returns, and verify the microwave operates.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- An over-the-range panel lives in the grease path of whatever is cooking underneath it, so cleaning it regularly is genuine maintenance rather than housekeeping - but do it with the appliance dead at the breaker, because the panel senses through live circuitry.
- The magnetron circuit runs at thousands of volts and its capacitor holds that charge with the appliance dead and cold, so no part of this diagnosis is an owner task once the case is on the other side of it.
- Getting inside an over-the-range microwave means unbolting it from the cabinet above and lifting it clear of the range below, which needs two people and a clear cooktop before anything else.
