What 3d22 Means
Built-In Microwave, including the microwave-oven combination: KitchenAid gives 3d22 the sentence "There may be a problem with the Oven Temperature Sensor, the Control, or the associated wiring." A combination unit uses this probe for its conventional cooking modes, so the code tends to surface during a bake or a convection cycle rather than during plain microwave heating. That is a useful observation, not a rule KitchenAid publishes.
Common Causes of 3d22
- A temperature probe that has drifted out of range or failed open
- Sensor wiring damaged, disconnected or reading through a corroded pin
- A control no longer interpreting the sensor signal correctly
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Let the cavity cool completely first - a combination unit holds heat long after the display goes dark - then power the unit down by switching off the circuit breakers for one minute, power it back up, watch the oven for one minute to see whether the code returns, and verify the oven operates. If you have an independent oven thermometer, put it in the cavity on the next conventional cycle; whether the real temperature matches the setting is the single most useful thing you can hand over when 3d22 is being diagnosed.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- Telling a failed probe from a failed control needs a resistance reading taken with the appliance dead, and the two faults look identical from the front of the cabinet.
- The high-voltage capacitor inside a microwave can hold a lethal charge after the unit is unplugged and the display is dead, so the inside of the cabinet is not an owner check at any point in this process, whatever the code turns out to mean.
- A built-in microwave is trimmed into a cabinet run and carries its weight on a frame, so it comes out of the wall before anything inside it can be reached - not a step to improvise alone.
