What F9E2 Means
Dishwasher: F9E2 is published as "Potential Cause: Drain motor error". Where F9E1 describes a drain that took too long, F9E2 points at the motor that does the draining. KitchenAid's steps are still largely external - remove the garbage disposer knockout plug on a new installation, check the disposer and drain for clogs, straighten a kinked drain hose because a kinked or clogged hose can cause poor drainage or no drain at all, and verify the hose is routed correctly on the correct side and inside the frame - and only then cycle power and schedule service if the error returns. That order is deliberate: a pump working against a blocked line looks a lot like a failing pump.

- A drain motor that will not start or has failed under load
- A hose kinked, crushed behind the machine or routed outside the cabinet frame
- A blocked disposer or a knockout plug still in place from installation
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
With the machine unplugged or its breaker off, follow the drain line from the back of the machine to where it connects at the sink and straighten any kink you find. Check that the hose runs inside the cabinet frame on the correct side rather than being crushed behind the machine. If the drain goes into a disposer, run the disposer to clear it, and on a newly installed machine confirm the knockout plug was taken out. Then restore power, cycle it for thirty seconds as KitchenAid describes, and run an empty cycle to see whether the code returns.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- A drain pump that has failed is inside the sump under the tub, reachable only with the machine drawn out, drained and isolated, and the seals below it have to be remade watertight afterwards.
- Drain pumps often fail because something hard got into them, so replacing the pump without finding what broke it usually means doing the job twice.
- Standing water in a sump conceals glass and metal fragments that cut hands reaching in blind, which is why that work belongs to somebody who has drained and lit it first.
