What Lock Means
Electric (radiant smoothtop) Cooktop, and on the page KitchenAid publishes jointly for Electric and Induction Cooktops: Lock is a feature working, not a fault. KitchenAid describes the control lock as avoiding unintended use of the surface cooking areas, and explains that its behaviour depends on when it was set. If control lock is activated while power to the cooktop is off, the cooktop is locked out entirely and the cooking areas cannot be turned on by the touch controls. If it is activated while power is on, all keypads are locked out except Power and Off. That second detail matters: a locked cooktop can still be switched off, which is the one control you would never want taken away.
Common Causes of Lock
- Control lock deliberately set, or set unintentionally by a long press
- The lock activated while the cooktop was powered off, which locks the areas out completely
- A control that is not registering the unlock hold because something is on the glass
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Touch and hold LOCK for three seconds to unlock the cooktop - that is the published instruction and it is usually all that is needed. If the panel does not respond to the hold, check that nothing is resting on the control area and that the glass is clean, because the lock key has to be read like any other. If Lock remains displayed with a clear, clean panel and a proper three-second hold, power the cooktop down by switching off its circuit breakers for one minute, power it back up, then watch the panel for one minute to be sure the code does not come back and verify the cooktop operates.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- There is no fault here to repair in the ordinary case, and a lock that works is doing what it exists to do around children.
- If a correct three-second hold on a clean panel will not release the lock, the touch control is not reading properly, and that assembly is bonded under the glass top.
- Pressing harder and repeatedly on an unresponsive panel is how a glass touch surface gets cracked, which turns a setting into a real repair.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
