What FC E4 Means
Electric (radiant smoothtop) Cooktop, and on the page KitchenAid publishes jointly for Electric and Induction Cooktops: FC E4 is one of the few cooktop codes where KitchenAid names a single specific item rather than a list - there may be a problem with the wire harness connecting the cooktop user interface (touchpad) to the induction module. That is unusually precise. The harness is the run of wires carrying your instructions from the glass to the electronics that drive the coils, and a harness fault means the two ends are both present but no longer reliably connected, so the cooktop stops rather than act on a partial message.
Common Causes of FC E4
- The harness between the touchpad and the induction module loose at a connector
- Wires in that harness chafed where they pass a bracket or an edge
- Corrosion or heat damage at one of the harness terminations
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Let the glass cool first. A radiant or induction surface stays hot enough to burn well after the heat is off, which is why these cooktops carry a residual-heat indicator at all. Turn the cooking areas off and power the cooktop down by switching off its circuit breakers for one minute, power it back up, then watch the panel for one minute to be sure the code does not come back and verify the cooktop operates. Note whether the fault is constant or comes and goes - a harness problem very often behaves intermittently, appearing after the cooktop has been running and warming up, or when a particular zone is selected, and that pattern is worth more to a technician than the code number by itself.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- A harness fault is found by tracing and measuring along its length, which needs the cooktop out of the counter and the circuit isolated before anything is touched.
- Both ends of this harness are components that cost far more than the wiring, so replacing either on a hunch is an expensive way to leave the actual fault in place.
- The induction module beside it stores charge and switches high currents, which is why nothing under an induction glass top is a reasonable owner target.
