Electric (radiant smoothtop) Cooktop, and on the page KitchenAid publishes jointly for Electric and Induction Cooktops: the sentence is the same on both - there has been a loss of communication between the user interface, or keypad, and the user interface control. Those are two separate things despite the similar names: the keypad is what your finger touches, and the user interface control is the board that reads it. When the board stops hearing the keypad, or stops believing what it hears, the cooktop reports it rather than act on a setting it cannot confirm. F6E4 is published with exactly the same sentence as F6E0 and on its own page, which means the two are reported separately even though KitchenAid describes them identically.

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Let the glass cool first. A radiant or induction surface stays hot enough to burn well after the heat is off, which is why these cooktops carry a residual-heat indicator at all. Check the glass over the control area is clean and clear first, since a contaminated keypad and a keypad that cannot be heard look identical from the outside. Then power the cooktop down by switching off its circuit breakers for one minute, power it back up, then watch the panel for one minute to be sure the code does not come back and verify the cooktop operates. Note whether the panel responds to anything at all while the code stands - a completely unresponsive keypad and one that takes some presses are different reports.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- A cooktop that cannot hear its own keypad reliably may also miss the Off press, which is the one instruction you most need it to act on.
- Both named parts and the harness between them live under a glass top that is sealed into the countertop, so none of it is inspected from above.
- Choosing between a keypad, a control board and the wiring between them without measuring is how two parts get bought for one fault.
