What F61 Means
Electric (radiant smoothtop) Cooktop, and on the page KitchenAid publishes jointly for Electric and Induction Cooktops: the sentence for F61 is the longest of the cooktop set - there may be a problem with the user interface (touch control), the power control module, the associated wiring, or the electrical supply. Four candidates, and the last one is the reason this page is treated seriously: the electrical supply is not part of the appliance. A cooktop draws a heavy current on a dedicated circuit, and a supply that sags, loses a leg or arrives through a degraded connection looks to the control like a fault it has to stop for.
Common Causes of F61
- The electrical supply to the cooktop sagging, losing a leg or arriving through a poor connection
- The power control module not responding as expected
- The user interface touch control, or the wiring between it and the module, at fault
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Turn every cooking area off and power the cooktop down by switching off its circuit breakers for one minute, power it back up, then watch the panel for one minute to be sure the code does not come back and verify the cooktop operates. While you are at the panel, notice whether the breaker feels warm, looks discoloured or has tripped before, and whether anything else in the house dims or drops out when the cooktop runs. Do not open the panel or the cooktop's terminal box - those observations are made from outside. If F61 returns, the supply is one of four published candidates and it is the one that wants an electrician rather than an appliance technician.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- One of the four published candidates is the household circuit, and a degraded connection on a circuit this size heats up inside a box where nobody sees it.
- Four candidates in one sentence cannot be narrowed by swapping parts; it is narrowed by measuring the supply first and the boards after.
- The cooktop terminal block sits under the unit at full supply voltage, which is not a place to look with the breaker on, and the glass top has to come out of the counter to reach it.
