What F21 Means
F21 is published three times and the texts do not agree, so all of them are given here. On the general Electric (radiant smoothtop) Cooktop page the sentence is that there is a problem with power supply frequency. On the radiant-element entry, and again on the page KitchenAid publishes jointly for Electric and Induction Cooktops, the sentence is that there may be a problem with the cooktop overheating, that you should verify installation, and that you should allow approximately five minutes to cool. One of those is about the electricity arriving at the cooktop and the other is about heat the cooktop cannot shed. Neither is confirmed over the other; what settles it is measuring the supply and checking the installation clearances on the actual unit.
Common Causes of F21
- The cooktop overheating because its installation cannot shed heat, which is one published reading
- A problem with the frequency of the power supply reaching the cooktop, which is the other
- Items packed under the cooktop restricting the airflow the underside depends on
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Treat the heat reading first, because it is the one with an owner step in it: turn everything off, let the cooktop cool for about five minutes, and while you wait open the cabinet below and clear anything stored against the underside of the unit. Then power the cooktop down by switching off its circuit breakers for one minute, power it back up, then watch the panel for one minute to be sure the code does not come back and verify the cooktop operates. If F21 comes back on a cool, well-ventilated cooktop, the supply-frequency reading is what remains, and that is a question for a qualified electrician about the circuit rather than for the appliance.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- The two published meanings send you to two different trades - one to a technician at the cooktop and one to an electrician at the panel - and choosing wrongly wastes a visit.
- A cooktop that genuinely cannot shed its heat puts that heat into the cabinet and the counter around it every time it runs, and that damage accumulates quietly.
- Supply frequency and voltage are measured at the circuit with instruments, not inferred from how the cooktop behaves, so this is not something to conclude from the display.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
