What Displaying H or HOT Means
Electric (radiant smoothtop) Cooktop: this is an indicator, not a fault. KitchenAid states that an H or HOT appears in the heat setting window when any surface cooking area is too hot to touch, even after that cooking area has been turned off. Radiant elements put heat into the glass, and the glass keeps it long after the element stops glowing, so the display goes on telling you the surface is dangerous until it is not. Nothing has gone wrong, nothing needs resetting, and the letter clears itself as the glass cools. KitchenAid only moves on to a breaker reset in the case where the H stays lit or flashes after the cooktop has properly cooled.
Common Causes of Displaying H or HOT
- A cooking area still holding heat after being switched off, which is the normal reason
- Heat carried into a neighbouring area by an adjacent ring or by a hot pan set down on it
- A residual-heat sensing circuit that has stopped clearing once the glass is genuinely cold
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Wait, and keep hands and anything meltable off the glass while you do. The indicator clears on its own as the surface drops below the temperature at which it would burn you. If the cooktop has been off for a long time, is cool to a cautious touch near the edge, and the H is still displayed or is flashing, then power the cooktop down by switching off its circuit breakers for one minute, power it back up, then watch the panel for one minute to be sure the code does not come back and verify the cooktop operates.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- There is nothing failing here in the ordinary case, and the indicator exists to stop a cool-looking black surface burning someone who trusted their eyes.
- If the H stays on a cold cooktop, the temperature sensing is misreporting, and that sits under a bonded glass top that comes out of the counter rather than off it.
- Testing a residual-heat circuit means working under a cooktop at its supply terminals, which is not a place to be with the breaker on.
