What F9Q1 Means
Over-the-Range Microwave: KitchenAid publishes for F9Q1 "The oven could not execute the function. There may a problem with the User Interface (Touch Pad) or the associated wiring." An instruction failed and the touch pad is named as the candidate. On an appliance mounted above a cooking surface the pad takes more abuse than any other part of the front, and a panel that has stopped reporting reliably will produce exactly this: commands that do not complete.
Common Causes of F9Q1
- A touch pad contaminated, cracked or no longer responding correctly
- A ribbon or connector between the pad and the control
- A control input misreading an otherwise sound pad
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Switch off the cooking surface underneath and let it cool before you stand at the appliance at all - an over-the-range unit puts your forearms directly above a range, and a burn from a hot hob is the injury that actually happens while people are troubleshooting a microwave. Then power the unit down by switching off the circuit breakers for one minute, power it back up, watch the microwave for one minute to see whether the code returns, and verify the microwave operates.

- Cleaning a touch pad on a powered appliance means a damp cloth on live sensing circuitry, which is why the breaker goes off first.
- The magnetron circuit runs at thousands of volts and its capacitor holds that charge with the appliance dead and cold, so no part of this diagnosis is an owner task once the case is on the other side of it.
- An over-the-range unit hangs on a wall bracket above a cooking surface and is bolted through the cabinet above it; taking it down is a two-person job over a cooktop, and dropping it is the usual way this goes wrong.
