What E63 Means
Over-the-Range Microwave: KitchenAid publishes for E63 "The Oven Sensor circuit reported a shorted condition to the control board. There may a problem with the Sensor, the Appliance Control Board, or the associated wiring." KitchenAid publishes exactly the same sentence here as it does for E62 and maintains a separate page for each. That tells you the control distinguishes the two conditions internally; it does not tell you how, and this page will not guess. The published procedure is the same power reset in both cases.
Common Causes of E63
- An oven sensor failed short
- Wiring in the sensor circuit shorted to chassis or to another conductor
- A control board input at fault
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Switch off the cooking surface underneath and let it cool before you stand at the appliance at all - an over-the-range unit puts your forearms directly above a range, and a burn from a hot hob is the injury that actually happens while people are troubleshooting a microwave. Then power the unit down by switching off the circuit breakers for one minute, power it back up, watch the microwave for one minute to see whether the code returns, and verify the microwave operates.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- Two codes with one published explanation means the display cannot tell you which condition you have, which is an argument for a measured diagnosis rather than a guessed one.
- A microwave stores energy in its high-voltage capacitor, and that charge does not drain when the power goes off; opening the outer case is therefore dangerous even on a unit that has been disconnected for hours.
- This unit is mounted over a cooking surface, so any work on it starts with the range switched off and cool and a second person taking the weight - not with a screwdriver.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
