What E21 Means
Over-the-Range Microwave: KitchenAid publishes for E21 "The Thermal Sensor circuit reported open to the control board. There may a problem with the Thermal Sensor, the Appliance Control Board, or the associated wiring." An open circuit is a break: the board looked for the sensor and found nothing on the other end. That is a useful distinction, because a broken wire, an unplugged connector and a sensor that has failed open all read the same to a control board and all read differently from a sensor that is merely inaccurate.

- A thermal sensor failed open
- A broken wire or an unseated connector in the sensor circuit
- A control board input that has failed
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Switch off the cooking surface underneath and let it cool before you stand at the appliance at all - an over-the-range unit puts your forearms directly above a range, and a burn from a hot hob is the injury that actually happens while people are troubleshooting a microwave. Then power the unit down by switching off the circuit breakers for one minute, power it back up, watch the microwave for one minute to see whether the code returns, and verify the microwave operates.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- The control uses this reading to decide when to stop heating, so an appliance reporting the circuit open has lost a protection rather than a convenience.
- The magnetron circuit runs at thousands of volts and its capacitor holds that charge with the appliance dead and cold, so no part of this diagnosis is an owner task once the case is on the other side of it.
- This unit is mounted over a cooking surface, so any work on it starts with the range switched off and cool and a second person taking the weight - not with a screwdriver.
