What E11 Means
Over-the-Range Microwave: KitchenAid publishes for E11 "The Gas Sensor reported a problem to the control board. There may be a problem with the Gas Sensor or the associated wiring." KitchenAid names this component the Gas Sensor and does not say what it measures or where it sits, so nothing further is claimed here about it. What the sentence does say is the same thing the keypad code says: the sensor reported the problem itself rather than being caught out by the board.

🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Switch off the cooking surface underneath and let it cool before you stand at the appliance at all - an over-the-range unit puts your forearms directly above a range, and a burn from a hot hob is the injury that actually happens while people are troubleshooting a microwave. Then power the unit down by switching off the circuit breakers for one minute, power it back up, watch the microwave for one minute to see whether the code returns, and verify the microwave operates.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- KitchenAid publishes no description of what this sensor measures, so any claim about what a fault against it means for safety would be invention rather than documentation.
- The high-voltage capacitor inside a microwave can hold a lethal charge after the unit is unplugged and the display is dead, so the inside of the cabinet is not an owner check at any point in this process, whatever the code turns out to mean.
- This unit is mounted over a cooking surface, so any work on it starts with the range switched off and cool and a second person taking the weight - not with a screwdriver.
