What DOOR or OPEN and CLOSE DOOR in display Means
Built-In Microwave, including the microwave-oven combination: this is designed behaviour, not a fault. KitchenAid states that "If a message about the door appears in the display, the door has been closed for 5 minutes or more without the microwave oven being started," and explains why plainly: "This occurs to avoid unintended starting of the microwave oven." The remedy it gives is to open and close the door, then start the cycle. Its page also covers the case where the door will not close properly, asking you to remove all packing material, check that none of it is blocking the door lock system, close the door firmly, and check that a cooking rack is not out of position and holding the door open.
Common Causes of DOOR or OPEN and CLOSE DOOR in display
- The door closed for five minutes or more without a cycle being started
- Packing material left in place and fouling the door lock system
- A cooking rack out of position so the door cannot close fully
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Open the door and close it again, then start your cycle - on a unit that has simply been sitting closed, that is all of it. If the message persists, look at why the door may not be latching: packing material left in place on a new installation, a rack sitting proud of its supports, or a dish too large for the cavity. All of those are checks you make at the open door with nothing dismantled.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- This is a safety interlock behaving exactly as designed, so the only harmful response is to start looking for a way around it.
- If the door genuinely will not latch, the latch and its switches are inside the cabinet next to a capacitor that stays charged after the appliance is unplugged.
- A door that has to be forced to shut is a door whose seal and hinge are being damaged every time, and the seal is what keeps the cavity doing its job.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
