What SE Means
Over-the-Range Microwave: KitchenAid publishes for SE "There is a problem with the Keypad (User Interface) or the associated wiring." Two characters and a flat statement - there is a problem, rather than there may be one. The keypad on an over-the-range unit works in the worst environment of any control panel in the kitchen, sitting in the heat and grease rising off whatever is cooking below it, and a membrane that has taken years of that eventually stops reporting cleanly.

- A key registering as held down, commonly from grease under the membrane
- A keypad or user interface assembly that has failed
- Wiring between the keypad and the control board
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Switch off the cooking surface underneath and let it cool before you stand at the appliance at all - an over-the-range unit puts your forearms directly above a range, and a burn from a hot hob is the injury that actually happens while people are troubleshooting a microwave. Then power the unit down by switching off the circuit breakers for one minute, power it back up, watch the microwave for one minute to see whether the code returns, and verify the microwave operates.

- Cleaning the panel is worth doing and worth doing with the appliance dead at the breaker, because a touch panel senses through circuitry that is live whenever the appliance is.
- The magnetron circuit runs at thousands of volts and its capacitor holds that charge with the appliance dead and cold, so no part of this diagnosis is an owner task once the case is on the other side of it.
- This unit is mounted over a cooking surface, so any work on it starts with the range switched off and cool and a second person taking the weight - not with a screwdriver.
