What F40 Means
Electric (radiant smoothtop) Cooktop, and on the page KitchenAid publishes jointly for Electric and Induction Cooktops: the published sentence names three things at once - there may be a problem with the user interface (touchpad), the cooktop power control board, or the associated wiring. Those cover the whole chain from the glass you press to the board that switches power to the cooking areas. KitchenAid publishes no way to tell which of the three it is, and follows with a one-minute breaker reset. A sentence that names two boards and the wiring between them is a sentence that has narrowed the fault to a system rather than to a part.

- The touchpad assembly failing or misreporting
- The cooktop power control board not behaving as the panel expects
- The wiring between the two loose, chafed or corroded
🔧 One Safe Check You Can Try
Let the glass cool first. A radiant or induction surface stays hot enough to burn well after the heat is off, which is why these cooktops carry a residual-heat indicator at all. Make sure every control is off, clear and clean the glass over the touch area so a contaminated panel is not part of the picture, then power the cooktop down by switching off its circuit breakers for one minute, power it back up, then watch the panel for one minute to be sure the code does not come back and verify the cooktop operates. Note whether the panel responds normally while the code is displayed, because a working panel with a code standing puts the weight on the power control board end of the chain rather than the touchpad end.
⚠ Why You Shouldn't Go Further Than That
- Three candidates in one sentence means a part bought from the code alone has a one-in-three chance of being the right one, and none of them are cheap.
- The power control board switches the current that heats the cooking areas, so a board handled carelessly can leave an area energized while the panel reports nothing.
- All three live under a glass top that is bonded and sealed into the counter, and it comes out from above with the circuit off rather than being lifted for a look.
Opening a panel to inspect or repair something yourself doesn't automatically cancel your manufacturer's warranty — but it can risk accidental damage, and some manufacturers do have specific service conditions. Check your product's warranty terms, or ask us, before deciding.
